I could not Confirm this with Snopes
According to an Air Force pilot in addition to communicating with the local Air Traffic Control facility, all aircraft in the Persian Gulf AOR are required to give the Iranian Air Defence Radar (military) a ten minute 'heads up' if they will be transiting Iranian airspace. This is a common procedure for commercial aircraft and involves giving them your call sign, transponder code, type aircraft, and points of origin and destination. I just flew with a guy who overheard this conversation on the VHF Guard (emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz while flying from Europe to Dubai. It's too good not to pass along. The conversation went something like this... Air Defense Radar: "Unknown aircraft at (location unknown), you are in Iranian airspace. Identify yourself". Aircraft: "This is a United States aircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace". Air Defense Radar: "You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart our airspace we will launch interceptor aircraft". Aircraft: "This is a United States Air Force F-22 fighter, send'em up, I'll wait". Air Defense Radar: ...(no response, ...total silence)... |

Here are photos of my Dec 08 trip to Saigon and F/8's AO while it operated out of Chu Lai. I stayed in Hoi An, an ancient city located at the juncture of the Son Tu Bon River and the S. China Sea. The Son Tu Bon River was the northern boundary of the Americal AO. Not much left of "our" presence but steel and concrete and memories. James Sheridan sirideain1@gmail.com

It is so good to see many of the soldiers that I served with. They probably don't remember me because of my joining later.
Brady who was shot when Shanahan went down wrote to me. I always wondered if he made it. Secrist was my best friend. He and I had guard duty together and he was shot down and killed that day. I have always felt bad that he died so tragically.
I always wondered what happened to Huggins and Johnny Rhone.

It is with a heavy heart that I am contacting you and the fellow Blue Ghosts to tell you all that my Ron Nishita, your brother and comrade, passed away suddenly on Thursday July 10th. He was such a fighter and survived so long and endured so much. He lived with the scars of Vietnam but lived a full life with such vigor. From fishing to golf to bowling his perfect 300 game. He wore proudly his Blue Ghost cap and although he missed the reunion, he so wanted to go but his breathing issues had impacted any travel abilities. He zoomed up and down the halls of the VA in his mobile chair like it was a corvette. He didn't wallow in his condition, he persevered. I wish he could have reconnected with all you Blue Ghosts and swapped stories and better times at your reunions. I am crushed by the emptiness he has left with family and friends and I am sorry too that you have lost another Blue Ghost. ~elayne nishita~ 4100 S Desert Spur Lane Tucson, AZ 85735 | |||

This is John Brennan, active member of the VHCMA
and the 114th Avn Co Assn. I'm collecting
"nicknames" (i.e. FLYING COFFIN,IRON BUTTERFLY) that
in-country Army copter crews painted on their aircraft
during their Vietnam tours, 1961-73. Future book by
aviation publisher is in the making.
Have cataloged over 1,900 names to date. I expect
that number to exceed 2,500 when complete. Would very
much like to include as many personalized Blue Ghost
copter names as possible. Photos of "names" are fine
but not necessary to be included in the database
section of the book. "Names" alone will do.
The second part of this book project is the photo
collection of helicopter "nose art" that includes
"names", artwork, graffiti, everything & anything that
was painted officially and unofficially on in-country
Army copters, 1961-73.
Send "nickname" info and/or scanned "nose art" pics
to johnmailman@yahoo.com

A memorial service honoring the life of Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Billy Gene Williams will be held at 10:30 AM on June 28, 2008 at Park Hill Baptist Church, Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The service will be conducted by Reverend Erby Burgess assisted by Reverand Free Clower. Billy passed away peacefully in the presence of his wife and son at the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home on June 12, 2008 after a lengthy illness. Born March 24, 1933 near Trumann, Arkansas, he attended Ouachita Baptist University where he met his wife, Norma Stephens Williams. At Ouachita, he played football, basketball and tennis. After graduation in 1955, he began a distinguished career in the United States Army. During his 23 years of active duty, he served one tour in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. As a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, he was recognized for heroism under enemy fire and awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart. After retirement from the Army, he taught part-time in the Business Departments of Ouachita Baptist University and Henderson State University both located in Arkadelphia, AR. In addition to spending time with his family, “Daddy Bill” (as he was affectionately called by his grandchildren) enjoyed tennis, bridge, reading, officiating high school football and travel. He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia, his father, Sherman, his mother, Jewell, and two brothers, Robert and David. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Norma Stephens Williams, his son, Dr. Michael R. Williams and wife Beth, of Shreveport, his daughter, Dr. Karen P. Bullington and husband Kirk, of Woodstock, GA, grandchildren, Kaitlin, Matthew and Sean Williams, Ashley, Emily and Wesley Bullington, his sisters, Joy Marie Hughes, Linda Franks, Diane Tschabold, Kathy Younts and Becky Croom, his brothers, Charles Croom, Wayne Croom and Tim Croom. The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent and compassionate care provided by Dr. Roy Fleniken, medical director of the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home. The family also wishes to thank the following physicians for their excellent care: Dr. Mark Mainous, Dr. Michael Rainer, Dr. Michael Sewell, Dr. Sanjeevi Tivakaran and Dr. Michael Walton as well as the excellent nursing and ancillary care provided at Willis-Knighton Bossier, the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home, and Twin Rivers Health and Rehabilitation Center in Arkadelphia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made to the Bullington-Williams Pre-Med Scholarship Fund at Ouachita Baptist University (www.obu.edu) or Park Hill Baptist Church, 3333 Hollywood Road, Arkadelphia, AR 71923. Arrangements are by Welch Funeral Home of Arkadelphia. Visit www.welchfh.net to sign the online guest book and view the video tribute. |
