Thomas Stillwell

Thomas Stillwell posted this in the BlueGhost.com guest book. I think the door gunner was Fred Hersom.  John Shepardson or Fred should know? I remember the event, one of the few times I heard excitement in Doug Marett's voice.

  1. Stillwell - great to hear from you.
This is a literal "blast from the past". I remember the incident well....one second we're looking thru the windshield at sky, a fraction of a second later we're looking at sand. I think back on it often - I can't believe the bad guys actually thought they could get us that way. As far as I know it was the ONLY time they ever tried it against anybody anywhere in the Americal AO. I'm pretty sure Fred was the doorgunner. And yes, J.D. was wide awake after the nose rolled over.

  2. John,

Good to hear from you as well. I am glad you remember. I have had a tough time trying to get My records documented properly. My son is a retired Master Sergeant from the Air Force and is trying to help my get documentation to update my records. I never received credit for any combat flying time or the Unit Presidential Citation. I was in the back of the chopper that day with Fred. He saved my life. I was only 18 years old. I am 61 years old now and not in good health. I appreciate you responding. Have you ever heard from SFC Taylor? He was really good to me. I hope your doing well and hope to see you at the Orlando reunion.
